Westwinds Communities manages Glen Mead Park I & II on behalf of the Provincial Ministry of Seniors and Housing. The site includes a private walkway which extends from the Glen Meads Park to 6th avenue SW down a steep incline through Town of Black Diamond property.
Following the closure of the pathway last winter, Westwinds has continued to review the current state of the pathway which is in poor repair and has an unsafe incline. Based on the current condition, Westwinds is proceeding with permanently closing the pathway this fall. The existing pathway will be rehabilitated to a grass surface and the railing removed. Work is expected to take place this fall as it can be accommodated into our operating budget.
Westwinds recognizes that many of you will be disappointed to hear this news, but Westwinds recognizes the material risk that exists with continued use of the pathway. We encourage you to use the sidewalk along Highway 22 for safe passage.
In consultation with the Town of Black Diamond, Westwinds has been exploring alternate options for a future pathway which would be more easily accessible and safe not only for our seniors, but also for our employees and the general community. We have reviewed the current pathway users and potential users if the pathway had a more gradual slope and increased accessibility.
The Town of Black Diamond and Westwinds propose an alternate pathway that would be developed over a series of phases. We would invite residents, tenants, employees and the general community to High Country Lodge, 707 Government Road, on October 5, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. to discuss the closure of the pathway and to discuss ideas for a new pathway.
